A Positive From The Financial Crisis: Many Illegals Are Leaving The U.S.

There aren’t many positives one can pull of our current economic crisis, particularly after the socialist bailout was forced upon us, but there is a positive: Many illegal aliens are returning to their countries of origins as a result of not being able to find work:

fter struggling just to pay his $300 monthly rent and send money to his wife and two children back in Honduras, Dionisio Urbina has given up. The day laborer is saving for a one-way plane ticket home.

“I lost hope about finding work,” the 54-year-old illegal immigrant said outside a Home Depot store as he entered his fourth straight week without a job. “I’m homesick. It’s best to leave.”

Good. I hope you are homesick. Go back home and don’t come back unless you plan to so legally.

The flow of immigrants back across the border tends to be cyclical, with many people going back home for the Christmas holidays. But some authorities say they are seeing a bigger-than-usual reverse-immigration effect this year.

Mexico City’s municipal government predicts between 20,000 and 30,000 immigrants above the usual number will return from the U.S. in the next few months because they cannot find work.

Mexican consulates in California and Chicago report that around 4,000 more Mexican immigrants than usual have already left for Mexico City because of the economic crisis.

There is another key point in this story. How many times have we been told by the pro-illegal immigration crowd that the illegals are coming to America to become Americans and provide a better life for their families. Well the latter might be true but the former certainly isn’t. This story is clear-cut evidence that many illegal and legal immigrants aren’t here to become Americans; They’re here to simply use the system and our economy. Why do I arrive at such a conclusion? Because what are they doing now that they can’t find work, are they staying here in America trying to find jobs? No, they’re running home. In sum, they’ve only come here for the jobs.

The good news is that this is the second such story to come out in the last month or so on this front. As you my recall, a study was released that estimated that illegal immigration has declined 11% in the last year. That’s a significant number.

This should also be seen as an opportunity. After all, we have had a significant amount of illegals deport themselves. They’ve done part of the job for us. We should use as a springboard to enhance border security and to streamline the legal immigration process. Think about it: If we enhance our border security it’s possible that only a fraction of these illegals who have left as a result of the economy might get back in once the economy rebounds.

This is a great opportunity to secure the border and to prevent many of these self-deported illegals from returning, but who else is pointing this out? Our presidential candidates? Please. McCain and Obama won’t touch this issue with a 10 foot pole. Illegal immigration, after all, wasn’t really even brought up during any of the debates. Does anyone remember the Summer of 2007 where everyone was saying that we should leave the immigration problem for the presidential candidates to discuss? In other words, make illegal immigration a campaign issue. Anyone remember that? Has anyone heard immigration mentioned by either candidate in the last 3 months?

Very interesting, don’t you think?
