Joint Chiefs Chairman Seeks to Woo Muslim World

By Josh Price

Do you need anymore evidence supporting my assertion that Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Cheifs, is nothing more than a public relations expert in a military uniform?

I know I have written about him extensively the last couple of weeks but it’s one thing after another with this guy. The latest comes from an article he has written for Joint Force Quarterly in which he makes his argument for revamping our message to the Muslim world (by the way, is there such a thing as the Christian world? Of course not. That would be divisive and offensive to no non-Christian parts of the World).

For example, according to Adm. Mullen we need to be more concerned with the perceptions our actions create for the so-called Muslim world:

To put it simply, we need to worry a lot less about how to communicate our actions and much more about what our actions communicate.

Really? I couldn’t care less what our actions communicate so long as they result in victory! But, as Adm. Mullen has demonstrated ad nauseum, he won’t use the word “victory.” After all, that’s no longer the apparent objective in Afghanistan. Our new objective is to provide expensive security for the Afghan people.

We’ve gone from two great chairmnn of the Joint Chiefs, Richard Myers and Peter Pace, to this PR guy.

What’s interesting, however, is Adm. Mullen actually makes a statement I agree with:

We shouldn’t care if people don’t like us. That isn’t the goal. The goal is credibility. And we earn that over time.

I completely agree with this, but why aren’t we taking this approach? Actions speak louder than words, and our actions demonstrate that we apparently do care if people like us.
